Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Matthew Hassan Kukah, has fired a sharp warning shot at former President Goodluck Jonathan over mounting calls for his political comeback in 2027.
Speaking at the Democracy Dialogue of the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Accra, Ghana, on Wednesday, Bishop Kukah hailed Jonathan’s historic concession of defeat in 2015, describing it as an act of statesmanship that saved Nigeria from chaos.
“You had the military, you had all the paraphernalia of power, but you chose peace instead of war. That decision remains a divine call, a sacrifice that gave democracy dignity and hope,” Kukah said.
However, the cleric urged Jonathan to resist being lured into another presidential contest by self-serving political interests. Quoting former Defence Minister, General Theophilus Danjuma, Kukah warned: “The voice of the devil is not so far from the voice of God. Listen carefully to those who want to use you as an instrument for the elongation of their interests, not yours or Nigeria’s.”
He advised Jonathan to reflect, pray, and allow conscience and national interest to guide any future political decision.
“Your 2015 choice was between yourself, your God, and your conscience,” Kukah said. “If you must decide again, let it be for the sake of Nigeria, not for those who see you as a pawn.”
