Some motorists and commercial tricycle (keke) riders have bemoaned the perpetual closure of Okere Road, Warri where the Nigerian Correctional Centre is located.
The road is a major link between the western and eastern parts of Warri, the commercial nerve centre of Delta State and one of the few motorable roads in Warri metropolis.
This important road was closed down on both sides since the #EndSARS protest and has been closed till the time of filling this report.
Motorists and commercial tricycle riders in Warri who were interviewed by correspondent on the issue, expressed disappointment over the perpetual closure of road when the #EndSARS protest has ended.
Some of the respondents described the closure of the road as unjustifiable and an infringement on the rights of road users.
Comrade Okpako Onaibie posited that it was disappointing on the part of the Nigerian Prison authorities to perpetually closed down the road for security reasons as he noted that battle ready combined government security agents were stationed at the correctional centre twenty fours daily.
A private car owner, Jolomi Temisaren who spoke in the same vein, also reasoned that the Nigerian Correctional Centre had no reason to close down a road that was built with tax payers’ monies.
“If they feel unsecured, then they should beef up their security networks and not deprive motorists of their rights of using the road. This is sheer injustice. Governor Okowa and President Buhari must hear this.”
While a keke rider, Jero Omokiniovo noted that the alternate routes to Okere Road which he identified as Esisi and Ogboru Roads were too narrow and not motorable.
He noted further that it was suicidal for vehicle users to ply Esisi Road when it was dark because of its loneliness and that Ogboru Road was always closed for usage after 7.00 pm.
