I just read that the Internally Displaced Persons’ (IDP) camp in Ewulu, Aniocha South LGA (my LGA) has been officially closed by the Delta State Government, as the floods have begun to recede and some of the affected plains are getting habitable again.
But what struck me particularly was the assistance of the State Government in relocating these thousands of IDPs back to their homes. It was reported that “single individuals were given N50,000 cash while households of internally displaced persons received N100,000.” This is quite commendable.
I was the Commissioner for Special Duties in charge of emergency services when a similar flood occurred in 2012. And, I can tell you it’s only those directly involved in the three-dimensional task of rescue, shelter, and relocation/rehabilitation that can appreciate the enormity of the job. The risks in pulling people out of the raging waters, the labour of creating emergency shelters, conveniences, and security, the diligence required to feed and care for the sick, the elderly, the pregnant, the infants, the emotionally unstable, the criminally minded, and, of course, ensuring a safe and orderly return of the IDPs to their homes.
Any leadership or agents of government that successfully see through these extraordinarily difficult processes deserve some compliment.
In my opinion, politics or no politics, we must be humane enough to appreciate the good works of others in such dire circumstances. On this note, my sincere thanks go to H.E. Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa and his team for the successful rescue, shelter, care, and relocation/rehabilitation of these our parents, brothers, and sisters.
