As part of the overall strategy of the Delta State Internal Revenue Service to expand its tax net by bringing in some of the most evasive potential tax payers, the informal business sector groups, a sensitization event has been held at the Delta State Internal Revenue Service field office in Udu.
The event was between small and medium enterprises operating in the area, and Trifex Limited, the revenue consultant in charge of Udu local government area.
Addressing stakeholders from small, medium, and large self-run businesses, the Project Manager at Trifex Limited, Mr. Ogheneriebore Soje, emphasized the importance of payment of personal income tax by this category of taxpayers as part of their compulsory civic responsibility of supporting the developmental initiatives of the state government.
He highlighted that the presumptive tax regime on the informal sector would be technology-driven to ensure effective and efficient collection, which he said would encourage proper accountability.
Mr. Soje urged stakeholders, including market leaders and artisans, to cooperate with officials during the enrollment process.
Stakeholders present welcomed the initiative, viewing it as an opportunity to demand better services from the government as taxpayers.
Mrs. Yellow Ayayi, a trader from Udu Market, expressed support for the token tax payment from businesses to the state coffers, provided it is utilized properly.
However, Mrs. Favour Eyiwenrun was of the opinion that any tax collected should be reinvested in the traders’ businesses when needed, underlining the importance of transparency and direct benefits for the contributing businesses.
