For his supporters fretting that the Supreme Court on Monday, February 10, 2025 handed back the leadership of the Rivers State House of Assembly to Martin Amaewhule and subsequently, Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, a quick assurance came immediately from Governor Siminalayi Fubara, urging his supporters that there’s no cause for alarm.
Against the backdrop of celebration within the camp of the Group of 27 House members, which had plotted the impeachment of the governor in November 2023, a move that triggered off events that have thrown the state into sustained crises, Fubara, said no such thing happened.
In fact, the governor said the decision from the apex court came because he decided not to pursue his appeal relating to the 2024 budget, after the verdict of the Court of Appeal which declared null and void.

Having been overtaken by events due to the effluxion of time, the governor, said he decided to abandon the case to allow the apex court use their busy schedule to treat other numerous cases of serious importance, adding therefore that he was unfazed by the celebration in the Wike camp over the judgement, where he was actually fined N2million.
Emphasising that the 2024 budget cycle ended on December 31, 2024, rendering the appeal unnecessary, Fubara, said in a statement signed by Warisenibo Joe Johnson, the state Commissioner for Information and Communication: “The appeal is of no useful purpose. The only reasonable thing left to do was to withdraw the appeal and have it dismissed.
“The Supreme Court is a very busy court. It would be unwise to burden the Honourable Court with academic appeals that hold no practical or utilitarian value. That is the appeal the urchins are celebrating. There is no Supreme Court judgment against Governor Fubara. Ignore the outdated political propaganda by some desperate politicians.”
