Obi Anene, co-author of ‘The History of Ubulu-Uku passes on at 89

Academic icon and co-author of “The History of Ubulu-Uku”, Elder Obi Anene has passed on Thursday morning.

A family source disclosed to UE that the 82-year old scholar died peacefully after a brief illness.

Late Anene made a bold attempt decades ago alongside Emma Ikemefune to write a book that can be described today as the foundation of Ubulu-Uku history: “The History of Ubulu-Uku”.

The prolific writer is also the author of a 35-page poetry collection titled Thunder, published in 1977.

He taught for sometime at Ika Grammar School, Agbor in Delta State, where he notably helped students achieve distinctions in Government in the 1972 WASCE.

Later, Anene joined the Nigerian Observer in Benin City as a features writer and as early as 1974, he had built a robust career in Journalism with the then Bendel State newspaper.

The scholar attended the prestigious Kings College in Lagos and later proceeded to to University of Benin, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) and University of Lagos at different times.

Returning home fully, the highly talented and erudite scholar also made efforts with some well meaning Ubulu-Uku scholars to establish the first ever community newspaper in Ubulu-Uku known as “Community Express Newspaper”. The grassroot newspaper held sway for sometime and later went under due to low patronage.

Until his demise on the 24th July, 2025, late Anene has remained a respectable voice in the affairs of Ubulu Uku in relation to culture and tradition, education, community development, mentorship amongst others.

He was a gentleman during his lifetime and was also kind, generous, intelligent and very unassuming.

The Ubulu-Uku illustrious son will be highly missed by a wide range of people cutting across students, researchers, community leaders, scholars, writers and other groups in the society.

He was happily married and blessed with numerous children and grandchildren who are equally successful.
