As an environmentalist and civil society advocate, I feel deeply compelled to commend the Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) for its impactful interventions in flood control, canal desiltation, and other environmental sustainability efforts across Delta State —particularly in oil-producing and host communities.

During a recent engagement in Asaba, I observed firsthand how these proactive measures are not only mitigating the negative effects of climate change, but also significantly improving livelihoods, restoring community access routes, and reducing the seasonal displacement of families to makeshift camps —often accompanied by huge economic and emotional losses.

I strongly believe that these efforts reflect the clear intent of the Environmental Sustainability pillar of the MORE Agenda, championed by our Governor, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori. The Commission, under the capable leadership of Hon. Chief John Nani (Chairman) and Chief Festus Ochonogor (Managing Director), is actively addressing critical issues such as coastal erosion, blocked waterways, and flooding, especially in vulnerable areas.

Furthermore, I deeply appreciate DESOPADEC’s investments in human capital development—from youth and women empowerment through skill acquisition, to bursary and scholarship programmes for students. These interventions are perfectly aligned with the Commission’s mandate of improving the lives of people in our communities.

I call on fellow stakeholders in Delta State to partner with DESOPADEC in delivering on its mission. To those bent on negative propaganda and politically motivated attacks, I urge a shift in mindset. Let us become partners in progress, offering constructive input and support to a Commission that has shown real commitment to accountability, transparency, and sustainable development.

Together, we can build a stronger, healthier, and more resilient communities across Delta State.
