Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, on Monday, September 22, 2025 launched the state’s transition to Smart Green Schools, describing education as the cornerstone of a new society and the bedrock of Enugu’s future prosperity.
In a statewide broadcast themed “Tomorrow Is Here: Education is The Cornerstone of a New Society,” Governor Mbah said the project marks “a new epoch in the history of our dear state, and in the life of our children.”
The governor stressed that Africa’s future will be defined by its young population, noting that by 2050, one in every three young people in the world will be African. He warned that the destiny of Nigeria and the continent depends on how well today’s children are prepared.
“Our sovereignty begins in the classroom,” he declared. “If we raise our children well and leave them opportunity, when they inherit tomorrow, they will shape it and defend it. If we fail them, no amount of slogans will save us.”
Drawing from his personal experience of growing up in the slums of Port Harcourt, Governor Mbah recalled how education became his “passport to a life of possibility,” rising from hardship to earn a law degree in the United Kingdom. He said the Smart Schools initiative was designed to level the field for young learners so they would not have to struggle as he did.
“Education is not just a private benefit, but a public right,” he emphasized. “The school is not just a service; it is a commons where the human village renews itself.”
The governor explained that the Smart Green Schools model would nurture children’s intellect, creativity, empathy, and civic responsibility, ensuring they grow into well-rounded citizens capable of driving innovation and building stronger communities.
He added that the integrated learning approach would produce “artists who can develop a business, engineers who can think creatively, and farmers with tech skills,” while reinforcing trust as the hidden infrastructure for democracy and social stability.
Mbah assured Ndi Enugu that his administration’s covenant of Tomorrow Is Here was about giving young people the tools to own the future through quality, inclusive, and transformative education.
