DOPF unveils plans for 2025 Convention, annual lecture on new tax law

The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has announced that its 2025 Annual Convention and Lecture will hold in Asaba, Delta State, from Wednesday, November 26 to Thursday, November 27, 2025, with a focus on Nigeria’s sweeping new tax legislation set to take effect next year.

According to a statement jointly signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the 2025 Planning Committee, Abel Johngold and Josephine Idiovwan Omodior, the two-day event will begin with the induction of new members and a capacity-building workshop for media professionals. The highlight of the programme will be the Annual Lecture, themed “Nigeria’s New Tax Law: Implications and Opportunities for Businesses and Society.”

The organisers said the chosen theme reflects the significance of the new tax framework, which comes into force on January 1, 2026. Over the years, Nigeria’s tax system has undergone several reforms — from the Petroleum Profits Tax Act of 1959 and the Companies Income Tax Act of 1961 to the introduction of Value Added Tax in 1993. However, the latest legislation is described as one of the most far-reaching reforms yet, designed to simplify tax administration, plug revenue leakages, and boost transparency in public finance.

DOPF noted that the convention will provide a vital platform for stakeholders to interrogate both the promises and pitfalls of the new tax regime. Discussions will explore how the policy can support business growth, promote accountability, ensure fairness in taxation, and channel public revenues into critical infrastructure and social development.

“This conversation is particularly crucial at a time when Nigeria must diversify its revenue base and strengthen fiscal stability,” the statement read.

As part of the programme, a keynote lecture will be delivered by a leading authority on fiscal and economic policy, followed by a panel session featuring representatives from government agencies, the private sector, professional bodies, and civil society. The forum hopes their insights will offer practical strategies for implementing the new law without stifling enterprise or social welfare.

Beyond policy discussions, the 2025 Convention will also reinforce DOPF’s commitment to media professionalism and development. By combining member induction, training sessions, and the flagship lecture, the Forum aims to foster continuous learning, deepen public debate, and enhance the role of the media in shaping discourse around one of the most consequential tax reforms in Nigeria’s recent history.
