May Agbamuche-Mbu has officially assumed office as Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following a formal handover from Professor Mahmood Yakubu in Abuja on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
The transition, which took place during a meeting with Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) at the commission’s headquarters, marks the beginning of a new phase in the electoral body’s leadership. Yakubu, who will complete his second and final five-year term in November 2025, urged commissioners and directors to extend their full support to Agbamuche until a substantive chairman is appointed.
Agbamuche-Mbu the longest-serving National Commissioner in INEC, now leads the commission as it prepares for the next phase of electoral reforms and institutional consolidation.
Yakubu was first appointed as INEC Chairman on October 21, 2015, by then-President Muhammadu Buhari, taking over from Amina Zakari, who served briefly in an acting capacity.
