In a blistering statement today, Thursday, October 23, 2025, the Labour Party (LP) accused the Acting Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, of “criminal conspiracy” and “forgery,” alleging she relied on a fake court order to reinstate embattled former party chairman, Julius Abure.
According to the statement signed by Ken Eluma Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser (Media) to the Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, the party described the incident as “a brazen assault on democracy” and a “judicial heist” orchestrated within INEC.
The controversy stems from a meeting convened by Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu on October 14, 2025, with leaders of all 18 registered political parties, at which Abure was allegedly recognized as LP chairman. A day later, she reportedly justified her action by citing an order of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court in Gwagwalada directing INEC to recognise Abure.
But the Labour Party says that order does not exist.
“Our independent and painstaking investigation revealed that no such order was ever issued,” Asogwa stated. “The court has confirmed, unequivocally, that it granted no order recognising Julius Abure as Chairman of the Labour Party.”
The statement further alleged that the Acting INEC boss “willfully relied on a fabricated document to justify an illegal and politically motivated action,” accusing her of partisan interference despite a Supreme Court judgment delivered on April 4, 2025, which upheld Senator Nenadi Usman as the authentic leader of the party.
“This is not just administrative recklessness—it is a criminal enterprise,” the party declared. “Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu has dragged INEC’s name into the mud, committing what amounts to a constitutional abomination against the Nigerian people.”
Describing the development as “a new low” for the electoral umpire, the Labour Party demanded Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu’s “immediate arrest and prosecution for forgery, conspiracy, and abuse of office.”
The party also directed its supporters across the country to begin “peaceful occupation” of INEC headquarters in Abuja until the acting chair is arrested and INEC complies fully with the Supreme Court ruling affirming Senator Usman’s leadership.
“With a new substantive INEC Chairman set to assume office, this is the moment to cleanse the Commission of political partisanship and criminal compromise,” the statement concluded.
