Oborevwori inaugurates new housing cluster in rebuilt Okuama community

Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, on Tuesday inaugurated a cluster of newly constructed housing units and supporting infrastructure in Okuama, Ughelli South Local Government Area, marking a major step in the state’s ongoing effort to rebuild the community devastated in March 2024.

The inauguration signals the formal beginning of resettlement for displaced indigenes after the tragic incident that claimed the lives of 17 Nigerian Army personnel and led to the demolition of the community.

Represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, Governor Oborevwori described the event as “a moment of renewal,” noting that the reconstruction reflects the state government’s commitment to healing and rebuilding.

“This is more than a commissioning; it is a turning point from pain to possibility,” he said. “We cannot erase the difficult experiences that displaced families here, but we have chosen the path of rebuilding, reconciliation, and collective rebirth.”

He said the newly completed resettlement camp stands as a symbol of hope, offering families a place to restore stability and rebuild their lives. Under the MORE Agenda, he added, the administration remains committed to restoring trust, protecting dignity, and supporting communities affected by crisis.

The governor urged Okuama residents to embrace the new beginning and work together to sustain peace and protect the rebuilt facilities. He also commended contractors, the Ministry of Housing, community leaders, security agencies, and other stakeholders for their contributions, describing the resilience of Okuama people as the “true strength” behind the project.

Chairman of Ughelli South Local Government Council, Hon. Lucky Avweromre, noted that the Community Resettlement Centre was executed by the council. He thanked the governor for complementing the initiative with a primary school, secondary school, and primary healthcare centre for the community.

In an address signed by Mr. Okrika Emmanuel and Comrade Akemor Victor, representatives of the Okuama community expressed gratitude to the state government, recalling the shock of the 2024 incident and acknowledging the governor’s intervention.

“If not that you came to our rescue, the situation would have been worse,” they said. “We believe in your government and promise to stand by it to ensure peace in our environment because you are a man of peace.”

The resettlement project consists of 40 room spaces, two blocks of 20 toilets and bathrooms, a solar-powered water reticulation system, and a paved, roofed walkway linking all structures.
