The 2025 Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols at the Delta State Government House Chapel on Tuesday unfolded in a solemn and spiritually uplifting atmosphere, as Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori and other top government officials took turns reading scripture passages that highlighted the themes of hope, obedience, sacrifice, and God’s enduring promises.
Governor Oborevwori, represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, opened the service with the First Lesson from Genesis 22:15–17, which recounts God’s covenant of blessing to Abraham in response to his steadfast obedience. The lesson aligned closely with the Chaplain’s central message on the significance of sowing the “needed seed” of faith.
The Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, delivered the Second Lesson from Isaiah 9:2–7, reaffirming the prophecy of the coming Messiah—described as the “Wonderful Counsellor” and “Prince of Peace”—and setting a tone of reverence for the celebration of divine light and salvation.
In his sermon titled “The Need for the Seed,” the Chaplain, Venerable Charles Osemenam, urged Christians to embrace sacrificial obedience as the seed God often requires to trigger blessings and breakthroughs. He explained that such a seed represents a specific act of faith at defining moments in a believer’s journey.
Citing Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice Isaac, the Chaplain described obedience as a transformative act rather than a symbolic gesture. He also referenced Matthew 1, noting that Joseph’s acceptance of Mary under extraordinary circumstances served as the seed that enabled the fulfillment of Christ’s birth prophecy.
“The seed Joseph had to sow was obedience,” he said, encouraging Christians to discern and respond to what God requires of them. “When you sow that seed, you will never regret it. There is always something God is asking you to give up or offer, so He can lift you out of troubling situations.”
This year’s Carol service blended deep spiritual meditation with vibrant artistic expression. A moving drama presentation depicted the enduring power of faith, reinforcing the themes highlighted in the scripture readings.
The atmosphere was further elevated by musical renditions from the Government House Choir, joined by visiting choirs from Winners Chapel, the Anglican Church, and the Catholic Church. Their harmonies filled the chapel with joyful worship, enriching the festive mood.
The event recorded an impressive turnout of government officials, including commissioners, permanent secretaries, special advisers, directors, and other dignitaries, reflecting unity, devotion, and collective celebration during the Christmas season.
