Gen. Musa, new Defence Minister pledges swift security reforms, assures Nigerians of peaceful sleep again

Nigeria’s newly inaugurated Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), has vowed to restore nationwide security and ensure that Nigerians can once again “sleep with both eyes closed” after more than a decade of widespread insecurity.

Speaking to State House correspondents on Thursday after taking his oath of office before President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Musa promised visible results in the shortest possible time. He said his immediate focus is to rebuild synergy across the armed forces and strengthen coordination with all security agencies.

“I can assure you that Nigerians will see results soon,” he stated. “I will restore and enhance collaboration within the armed forces and with other security agencies. Defence must take its rightful place in this country.”

The Minister emphasised that security remains a shared responsibility and pledged to harness collective efforts to tackle Nigeria’s security challenges. He noted that his return to the Defence Ministry is familiar terrain and promised to translate the goodwill he has received into measurable outcomes.

“I want to appreciate all Nigerians. They have shown me love, and I guarantee that I will do whatever it takes to secure this nation,” he said. “Mr President has also reiterated that we must make sure Nigeria is safe. Nigerians should go back to sleeping peacefully, return to their farms, and allow schools to operate without fear. Everyone will be carried along in line with the Renewed Hope agenda.”

Musa succeeds Mohammed Badaru, who served as Defence Minister from August 28, 2023, until his resignation on December 1, 2025.

During his Senate screening on Wednesday, the new Minister underscored the importance of technology in modern security management, proposing a comprehensive national database with integrated electronic identification to improve monitoring and crime detection.
