Delta Police reaffirms ban on fireworks, seizes pyrotechnics worth millions ahead of Yuletide

The Delta State Police Command has reiterated that the ban on fireworks, knockouts, and all forms of pyrotechnics remains firmly in place as the state enters the festive season. The warning follows the recovery of fireworks worth millions of naira across the state, signaling intensified enforcement ahead of Christmas and New Year celebrations.

In a statement issued on Thursday, December 4, 2025, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, emphasized that the prohibition covers the sale, use, distribution, and public display of items such as bangers, knockouts, and other explosive pyrotechnics. He noted that beyond causing public nuisance, such items are often exploited by criminals to mask their operations or create fear within communities.

According to the Command, the renewed clampdown is part of a broader strategy to ensure a safe, peaceful, and crime-free Yuletide. “Experience has shown that criminally minded persons can take advantage of fireworks to unleash terror on law-abiding residents,” the statement read.

Parents and guardians were urged to warn their children and wards against using fireworks, while traders were cautioned to immediately withdraw the products from their shelves. The police warned that anyone caught selling or using fireworks will be arrested, prosecuted, and have their goods confiscated.

To guarantee full compliance, the Commissioner of Police has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, alongside all Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Tactical Commanders, to enforce the ban strictly across their jurisdictions.

The CP also commended residents for their cooperation so far and urged the public to report any breach of the ban to the nearest police station or through the Command’s control room numbers:

  • 08036684974
  • 08114895600
  • 08025666914

The Command extended warm Yuletide greetings to all residents, wishing Deltans a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year in advance.

The statement was signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edafe Bright, Delta State Command, Asaba.
