The Delta State Government has donated ₦10 million to support A Ride for Life, a cancer advocacy and fundraising initiative by Miss Chineyenwa Judith Amadi aimed at assisting indigent cancer patients across the country.
Presenting the cheque on behalf of the state government, the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, described cancer as one of the most devastating diseases of modern times, stressing the need for collective action to ease its burden.
Dr. Emu said Governor Sheriff Oborevwori approved the donation as a show of solidarity with the initiative and the government’s commitment to humanitarian causes.
“This is our contribution, our statement of solidarity, and our commitment to humanity,” he said, adding that the state would continue to support initiatives that alleviate human suffering.
He disclosed that the state government was taking steps to establish a cancer treatment facility in Delta to enable residents access quality care without travelling long distances.
Commending Miss Amadi for riding a motorcycle across 16 countries to raise awareness, the SSG said the government was investing in initiatives that save lives and deliver real impact.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Joseph Onojaeme, said prevention and early detection remain the most effective weapons against cancer.
He noted that cervical cancer can be significantly reduced through early medical intervention, while breast cancer is highly manageable when detected early.
“Regular check-ups and timely medical examinations can save lives,” he said, adding that Delta State has functional, state-of-the-art MRI facilities across its three senatorial districts.
In her remarks, Miss Amadi thanked the Delta State Government for the support, describing A Ride for Life as a deeply personal initiative inspired by her experiences with loved ones affected by cancer.
She said many cancer patients abandon treatment not for lack of courage, but due to financial constraints, a reality that motivated her to invest personal resources into the campaign.
“The goal is to raise funds for those who cannot afford treatment and to remind them that they are not alone,” she said.
The event was attended by the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu; the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Festus Ahon; and other government officials.
