President Bola Ahmed Tinubu arrived in Ankara late Friday evening for a significant State Visit aimed at deepening bilateral relations between Nigeria and the Republic of Türkiye.
The President’s aircraft touched down at Ankara Esenboğa Airport at 9:03 p.m. local time. He was formally received by a Turkish government delegation led by the Minister of National Education, Yusuf Tekin. Nigeria’s Chargé d’Affaires in Türkiye, Ambassador Zayyad Abdulsalam, and other embassy officials were also present at the airport.
Following his arrival, President Tinubu was welcomed to his hotel by a delegation of senior Nigerian officials. Among them were the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi; the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake; and the Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (rtd). Several other ministers, presidential advisers, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency were also in attendance.
According to a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information & Strategy, the primary objective of the visit is to “strengthen the existing cordial relations between Nigeria and the Republic of Türkiye and explore further areas of cooperation.”
A key engagement during the visit will be formal discussions between President Tinubu and his Turkish counterpart, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The two leaders are expected to oversee the signing of several Memoranda of Understanding designed to advance a “mutually beneficial partnership” across various sectors.
The visit underscores the continued diplomatic efforts by the Tinubu administration to bolster Nigeria’s international partnerships and explore new avenues for economic and strategic cooperation. Further details on the specific areas of agreement are expected to be released following the bilateral talks.
