Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has directed all political appointees intending to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign from their current posts on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive was contained in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Eze Emu. According to the statement, the order aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries ahead of the 2027 polls.
The statement clarified that the resignation requirement applies to all categories of political appointees seeking to participate in the forthcoming primaries or vie for any elective office. Those affected include Honourable Commissioners, Advisers, Directors-General, Executive Assistants to the Governor, Senior Special Assistants to the Governor, Special Assistants to the Governor, Personal Assistants to the Governor, as well as all other political appointees in the state.
Affected officials are required to submit their formal resignation letters through the Office of the SSG no later than March 31, 2026. They are also expected to hand over to the Permanent Secretary or the most senior career officer in their respective Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).
The statement urged all concerned appointees to take note of the directive and ensure strict compliance.
