Asaba, Delta State — The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Delta State Chapter, commemorated the 2026 International Women’s Day with a vibrant celebration anchored on the theme, “Give to Gain… Empower Her Today, Prosper Tomorrow.”
The event, held in Asaba, drew a diverse audience of media professionals, entrepreneurs, students, civil society actors, and government representatives, all united in their commitment to advancing women’s empowerment and sustainable development.
In her keynote address, the Chairperson of NAWOJ Delta State, Mrs. Sonia Unobunjo, stressed that investing in women remains a critical driver of societal growth and prosperity. She noted that empowering women through education, economic opportunities, and leadership inclusion creates far-reaching benefits for families, communities, and the nation.
According to her, the theme “Give to Gain” reflects the principle that intentional support for women yields measurable returns, including improved economic stability, better health outcomes, and stronger institutions. She emphasized that empowerment requires sacrifice, mentorship, and the creation of enabling environments where women can thrive.
Unobunjo also condemned all forms of abuse against women, insisting that nothing justifies harassment or violence. “It is not an excuse to embarrass, rough-handle or rape a woman,” she stated, while commending the Delta NAWOJ chapter for its sustained advocacy and impact.
Guest speaker and Chief Executive Officer of Graceville Group of Schools, Engr. Mrs. Adebowale Tinuade Okonji-Umuokoro, congratulated women worldwide on the 2026 International Women’s Day, noting that the global celebration has spanned over a century.
She highlighted the importance of mutual support among women, explaining that both giving and receiving require openness and willingness. She urged women to uplift one another, stressing that shared growth strengthens society as a whole.
As part of the celebration, NAWOJ unveiled several empowerment initiatives targeting women and young girls, including the distribution of cash support to physically challenged women to boost their crafts and livelihoods. Beneficiaries described the intervention as timely and transformative, aiding their journey toward financial independence.
Participants at the event called for stronger policies, heightened awareness, and collective action to dismantle systemic barriers limiting women’s progress.
The event concluded with a renewed call for collaboration among government, the private sector, civil society, and individuals to sustain momentum in promoting gender equality.
NAWOJ Delta reaffirmed its commitment to championing women’s rights and opportunities, stressing that meaningful development can only be achieved when women are empowered to succeed.
As echoed throughout the gathering, empowering a woman today is a decisive step toward securing a more prosperous tomorrow for all.
