No fewer than 40 persons have been feared killed, with several others injured, following a deadly attack by suspected gunmen on Gari Ya Waye community in Angwan Rukuba, Jos.
The incident, which occurred on Palm Sunday night, March 29, 2026, at about 7:50 p.m., threw the community into chaos as terrified residents fled for their lives amid prolonged gunfire.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers stormed the area unchallenged, opening fire on unsuspecting residents before escaping without resistance. Security personnel, including operatives of the Nigerian Army, reportedly arrived nearly an hour later, around 8:45 p.m., by which time the damage had already been done.
A visit to the scene on the morning of Monday, March 30, revealed a grim toll, with at least 26 bodies counted in Angwan Rukuba alone. Casualty figures in other affected areas remain unclear, as some victims were taken away during the incident , while others were rushed to hospitals or deposited in mortuaries.
Tension continues to grip the area, with residents living in fear and uncertainty as authorities struggle to regain control.
In a reactive move, the Plateau State Government imposed a 48-hour curfew on Jos North, effective from midnight of March 29 to April 1, 2026, in a bid to forestall further breakdown of law and order.
Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang condemned the killings, describing the attack as barbaric and unprovoked, while assuring that security agencies are on the trail of the perpetrators.
Residents, however, have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information to aid ongoing investigations.
