June 12: Guwor urges accountability, transparency, grassroots participation in governance

As Nigeria commemorates the 2026 Democracy Day, Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria and Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, has called on citizens and lawmakers across the country to deepen accountability, transparency, and grassroots participation in governance.

Guwor, in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, described June 12 as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history, stressing that democracy can only flourish when the voices of the people are heard, protected, and translated into meaningful action.

He noted that State Legislatures, being the arm of government closest to the people, have a constitutional responsibility to enact laws that reflect the needs and aspirations of citizens, provide effective oversight, and ensure robust representation at the grassroots level.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, the Conference Chairman said that while the nation had made significant progress since the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election and the return to democratic rule in 1999, there was a need for democratic maturity to translate into tangible benefits for the people.

“Thirty-three years after June 12, 1993, and 27 years into the current democratic dispensation, our democracy has matured, but maturity must translate to results. State Houses of Assembly must continue to lead in enacting people-oriented laws, strengthening oversight, and promoting transparency in the management of public resources,” Guwor stated.

The Speaker highlighted the efforts of the Delta State House of Assembly under the 8th Assembly, saying the legislature, working in synergy with critical stakeholders, had remained committed to promoting prosperity and good governance in the state.

He commended Nigerians for their resilience and unwavering commitment to democratic ideals despite prevailing challenges and urged elected representatives at all levels to use the Democracy Day celebration as an opportunity to reflect on their mandate and renew their commitment to selfless service.

Guwor also reaffirmed the determination of the Conference of Speakers to collaborate with the Executive arm of government and other stakeholders in strengthening legislative institutions, improving lawmaking processes, and supporting policies that promote peace, unity, and prosperity across the country.

According to him, democracy extends beyond periodic elections and must be reflected in daily accountability, respect for the rule of law, and governance that improves the lives of ordinary citizens.

“As we celebrate Democracy Day, let us remember that democracy is not just an election every four years. It is daily accountability, respect for the rule of law, and service that lifts the ordinary citizen,” he said.

The Conference Chairman further prayed for sustained peace, unity, and progress in Nigeria and congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, governors, legislators, and all Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.
