The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria has pledged to deepen collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Interior to strengthen internal security, drive critical reforms, and improve citizen service delivery across the 36 states of the federation.
The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by the Conference, led by its Chairman and Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor, to the Minister of Interior, Rt. Hon. Olujimi Oyetunde Tunji-Ojo, at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.
Speaking during the meeting, Guwor said the engagement was designed to bridge the gap between federal internal policies and legislative actions at the state level, noting that state Houses of Assembly play a crucial role in domesticating laws and providing oversight on matters relating to the Ministry’s mandate.
According to him, closer collaboration between the Ministry and state legislatures would enhance the implementation of federal initiatives at the grassroots and promote more effective governance.
“We had a fruitful discussion on how state legislatures can better interface with the Ministry to support federal initiatives at the grassroots,” Guwor stated.
The Conference chairman stressed the need for coordinated efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s internal security architecture, saying peace, stability and national prosperity depend on robust cooperation between federal and state institutions.
“Our shared goal is national development, peace, and improved welfare for Nigerians,” he added, emphasizing that the visit was focused on deepening legislative-federal partnership in key areas under the Ministry’s supervision.
In his response, the Minister of Interior, Tunji-Ojo, welcomed the initiative and commended the Conference of Speakers for what he described as a proactive approach to intergovernmental collaboration.
The minister assured the delegation of the Ministry’s readiness to sustain dialogue with state legislatures through regular engagement, data and information sharing, as well as joint oversight of federal facilities located in the states.
Both parties agreed to establish formal channels of collaboration aimed at supporting citizen-centred programmes and strengthening service delivery nationwide.
The meeting ended with both the Conference of Speakers and the Ministry reaffirming their commitment to constitutional democracy, effective intergovernmental cooperation, and policies that advance national development and improve the welfare of Nigerians.
