Workers in Delta State have been directed to resume duties on Monday following the intervention of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori over the death of Mr. Adeda Ekwevugbe, a Deputy Director in the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education.

The directive followed a meeting between organised labour and the governor, as well as the constitution of an Administrative Panel of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding Ekwevugbe’s death.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Delta State Council, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, directing workers to resume at their respective duty posts by 8:00 a.m. on Monday.

Ofobruku said the criminal aspect of the matter was already being investigated, adding that arrests had been made in connection with the incident.

He said all persons found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

“Workers should remain calm as the unions will ensure that no stone is left unturned and justice shall be served,” Ofobruku said.

He explained that the labour unions would collaborate with the Administrative Panel of Inquiry to ensure that the circumstances surrounding the death were thoroughly investigated and justice done.

The NLC chairman thanked workers across the state for their solidarity following the incident and assured the family of the deceased of the unions’ support.

He also urged workers to remain committed to their duties and effective service delivery, while commending Governor Oborevwori for his prompt intervention.

The directive was jointly supported by the Chairman of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Delta State Council, Comrade Willson Asekutu.

The development comes amid concerns among workers following the death of the deputy director at his workplace, which had prompted reactions from organised labour and sections of the state public service.

The state government had subsequently announced the setting up of an Administrative Panel of Inquiry to examine the circumstances surrounding the death, while the criminal dimension is being handled by the relevant law-enforcement authorities.
