President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the release of $1 billion for the procurement of equipment to arm the security agencies in the country more in the fight against insurgency.
The Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, made this known on Wednesday shortly after a security meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
It was chaired by President Muhammadu Buhari.
“I can inform you that of recent, our leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, gave approval for the purchase of more equipment for the military, worth $1 billion,” said Dan-Ali.
Describing the security meeting as a normal one, Dan-Ali said one of the major issues discussed was the situation in some states of the federation with high level of insecurity.
The states, he said included Taraba and Zamfara.
“We have operationalised a division in Sokoto, there will be a brigade in Katsina and another brigade in Zamfara that will take care of security situation in that area.
“The strength of security personnel has increased, including the Air Force additional quick response group. They have added enough manpower in that area,” he said.
Dan-Ali also spoke on Leah Sharibu, the only Dapchi school girl still being held by the terrorists group over her refusal to renounce her faith.
“We are making all available efforts to see that the girl is returned safely,” he said.
