Lawmakers of the Delta state House of Assembly have passed a total of 27 bills that have been assented to by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to become laws.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori made this known in Asaba today, Wednesday, 7/6/2018 while addressing the Press to make the third anniversary of the sixth Assembly.
The Press briefing tagged “Account for Stewardship: The journey so far, Oborevwori said the stewardship account which covers the first, second and third sessions of the sixth assembly from June 8th, 2015 to June 2018, had a total of 75 bills and 36 motions. Thirth of these were Executive Bills, while 39 were private member bills.
“Twenty-seven bills have been passed and assented to, while five bills are awaiting assent,” he said, adding: “Ten bills are at the committee of the whole House, while 10 are pending at various committees of the House. One bill however, was withdrawn by leave of the House, and one failed first reading.”
Among the bills before the committee of the whole house are the Delta State Nomadic Cattle Rearing Control Bill, 2016, Delta State regulation of smoking in public places bill, 2016, Delta state sicle cell Centre bill, 2017, Delta State Cancer Control Agency Bill, Delta State Public and Private properties protection Bill, 2018, and Delta State Public Finance Management Bill, 2018, among others.
According to the Speaker, the Delta State Community serviced bill, 2015 was withdrawn by leave of the House, while the Delta stat regulatory Committee for the registration of all equipment leasing and the consolidation of equipment lessors bill, 2017 failed at first reading.
Among the bills at committee stage yet to report includes, Delta state Freedom of Information Bill, 2017, Delta State Information and communication Agency Bill, 2017, and the Delta State Morgtage and property bill, 2017.
Oborevwori announced that the bills passed and awaiting assent are: Delta State statistics bill, 2016; Delta State occupational safety bill, 2017; Delta State special offences court bill, 2016; Delta state office of the public defender bill, 2017 and the delta State Bureau for lands investment preparation charges bill, 2015.
On challenges, the Speaker said that the House had its fair share of challenges and experiences. He said: “During the period under review, the House had its fair share of challenges and experiences, and while the challenges from the onset seemed daunting, we knew that with determination and commitment we could do much for Deltans who deserve nothing but the best at all times.
“We hinged this firm belief on the fact that the legislature as an arm of government, and indeed, the sixth Assembly of the Delta State House of Assembly would be an instrument of change committed to the promotion of democratic tenets, the rule of law and the supremacy of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).
