The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has accused President Bola Tinubu of abusing power in the suspension and reinstatement of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, branding the move “autocratic” and unconstitutional.
ADC National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said in a post on X that Tinubu had no authority to suspend an elected governor. “The only governor the President can hire or fire is the Governor of the Central Bank,” he declared.
Abdullahi argued that Tinubu’s handling of the Rivers crisis was a dangerous precedent that undermined federalism and would stain his political legacy. “The cavalier manner in which President Tinubu suspended and subsequently reinstated Governor Fubara is whimsically autocratic, self-serving, and unconstitutional,” he wrote.
But the Presidency swiftly hit back, dismissing the ADC’s criticism as “empty noise.” Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, insisted Tinubu acted lawfully under Section 305 of the Constitution, which allows the President to intervene when law and order are under threat.
“What ADC offers Nigerians is late pontification. What the President delivered is stability, the return of democratic institutions, and peace in Rivers State,” Dare said, adding that Tinubu’s intervention averted bloodshed and preserved democracy.
