Agency Demolishes Illegal Structures in Asaba Markets, Clears Road Setbacks

The Delta State Capital Territory Development Agency (DSCTDA) has commenced the demolition of illegal structures along the Ogbogonogo Market corridor and surrounding streets in Asaba, intensifying its enforcement of urban planning regulations.

Officials from the agency on Wednesday dismantled unauthorized stalls, makeshift extensions, and other obstructions encroaching on pedestrian walkways and road corridors. The exercise targeted Amaechi Agusi Street, Falcon Club Road, and adjoining streets within the busy commercial hub.

Head of Environment, Mr. Isaac Nwosu, who led the operation, stated that the action followed repeated sensitization and abatement notices served on traders and property owners who failed to comply with environmental regulations.

Mr. Nwosu said the structures, erected on road setbacks, contributed to traffic congestion and environmental degradation while distorting the city’s master plan. “Our goal is to restore sanity, ensure free flow of traffic, and maintain the aesthetic standard befitting a state capital,” he said.

In a related development, Director General of the agency, Mr. Patrick Ukah, conducted an inspection tour of the cleared areas and adjoining roads to assess ongoing work ahead of an upcoming visit by the state governor.

Mr. Ukah expressed satisfaction with the progress of the exercise and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to sustaining environmental standards across the capital territory. He warned that any attempt to re-erect illegal structures on road setbacks would attract strict sanctions.

Residents and motorists in the area welcomed the intervention, noting that the clearance would improve visibility, enhance sanitation, and ease movement around the Ogbogonogo Market axis and surrounding streets.

The agency reiterated that monitoring and enforcement would continue to ensure lasting compliance and orderliness within the Delta State Capital Territory.
