Delta State contingent to the 19 National Sports Festival and Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa have been commended for winning the games.
Anioma Media Professionals which made the commendation urged the Delta State contingent to the sports fiesta in Abuja and Dr. Okowa not to relent on the pledge to develop sports infrastructure across the state.
Team Delta topped the overall medals table of the 19th NSF, with 88 gold, 45 silver and 58 bronze medals, to retain its title and its total domination of the competition that began in 1973.
The state took a commanding lead of the Abuja edition which ended on Sunday, December 16 in the Federal Capital.
A spokesman for AMP, Ken. Ugbechie said the victory of Team Delta was inspired by the motivation of the sportsmen and women that represented the state by Dr. Okowa who promised to reward handsomely medalists at the games.
Consequently, the Delta contingent went all out to maintain its enviable record of all-around excellence in sports but “to justify the resources that are being committed to human development in the state.”
Ugbechie, who is the Director of Media and Publicity said the achievement of Team Delta is a testimony of “the return investment in sports infrastructure by the state government but more importantly, a determination by the athletes to excel and launch themselves into the limelight.”
He said Governor Okowa’s promise to upgrade sporting facilities in various parts of the state “is a welcome development especially at this time when talented sports people can leverage it to better human conditions.”
