The All Progressives Congress (APC) has issued a stern rebuke to factional National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tanimu Turaki, accusing him of crossing red lines after he reportedly called for foreign intervention in Nigeria’s affairs.
Turaki, who was declared chairman by a faction of the embattled opposition party just three days ago, had urged foreign powers to step in to “save Nigeria from Christian genocide” and protect the nation’s democracy. But in a sharply worded statement on Wednesday, APC said such a call amounted to an open invitation to foreign invasion and a dangerous assault on the country’s sovereignty.
Describing Turaki’s comments as “reckless and unpatriotic,” the APC said the factional leader came across as “desperate… confused, incoherent, and grossly lacking in stamina and capacity” to handle the crisis tearing apart his party.
“Rather than embark on genuine reconciliation to calm the warring factions in his party, Turaki’s first official act was to call for foreign invasion of Nigeria,” APC National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said. “That is as shameless as it is dangerous.”
The ruling party argued that even during the PDP’s 16 years in power; despite what it termed the party’s “ruthless subversion of opposition”, no leader ever sought external interference as a remedy for internal party strife. Turaki’s statement, it added, was both an indictment of the PDP’s inability to manage its internal contradictions and “a final certification” of the party’s collapse.
APC urged the international community to ignore what it called a “disgraceful” and “pitiful distraction” born out of the PDP’s deepening disarray. The statement further alleged that Turaki’s remarks exposed the level of desperation now gripping opposition ranks.
According to the APC, the factional chairman’s call shows “how far they are willing to go, even to the extent of actively seeking destructive intervention of foreign powers on Nigerian soil” to advance a political agenda.
Calling on Nigerians to remain steadfast, the ruling party reaffirmed its support for President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, insisting it remains focused on delivering progress and prosperity across all sectors.
The statement was signed by APC’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka.
