As a measure to sustain high standards of practice left behind by legal luminaries in the law profession, the Chief Judge of Delta State, Justice Marshal Umukoro has challenged experienced senior members of the Bar to avail their expertise and experience to junior Lawyers.
Justice Umukoro gave the advice when he hosted the new executive members of the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Udu branch in Asaba.
The Chief Judge observed that most young lawyers who graduated from the Nigerian Law School have amorphous ambition without crystal clear focus on whether to practice or not, as their paramount concern was how to make quick money.
He said that it befits senior lawyers who have cut their teeth in the profession to mentor the pupil lawyers to put their focus in proper perspective, stressing that they were the ones to hold the future ace of the profession, as the veterans would retire one day.
While sharing his experiences with members of the bar on how he rose to the present position in the profession, the chief judge advised the young ones to be humble to undergo pupillage, and take advantage of the experienced ones and learn the rudiments of the practice from them.
He listed tips for a successful legal practice to include identifying and starting a career with a reputable law firm, set development goals and strategies on achieving them, and have a role model.
While congratulating the executive of Udu branch for their election, the Chief Judge assured that the bench would always carry them along as the judiciary alone cannot dispense justice without their cooperation.
He exhorted them to emulate the good example of Oleh branch, saying that in less than three months of swearing-in, it had commenced the construction of a Bar Centre, adding that they would only be remembered by the legacy they left behind.
Earlier, the Chairman of NBA, Udu Branch, Chief Benedict Asaboro, said that they were at the office of the Chief Judge to introduce the new executive to him, and to appreciate his support extended to them in all their activities.
He stated that the Chief Judge had carried out unprecedented reforms in the judiciary, which included increase in jurisdiction of magistrates, inauguration of courts across the state, establishment of criminal jurisdictions among others.
Asaboro whose entourage also including the immediate past chairman and vice of the branch Ayo Asala and Augustine Oliseh, pledged unalloyed support to the Chief Judge, promising to sustain the existing harmonious relationship between the bench and the branch.
He appealed to him to consider a memo sent to his office by Branch Secretary, Mr Erhurhu Omosefe, requesting court registrars to inform lawyers when there would be no sitting, saying that such timely information would save them from hazards of traveling
The highpoint of the visit was the presentation by the branch members of a portrait of the Chief Judge to him.
