The Delta State Government has officially launched an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system, branded as “Plate Detect,” to strengthen road safety and enforce compliance with traffic regulations across the state.
In a statement signed by the Director of Public Communication/Functioning Permanent Secretary, Stella Macaulay, the government announced that the technology has been deployed on major roads to monitor traffic activities and detect infractions in real time.
The system relies on strategically positioned cameras that scan vehicle number plates and instantly cross-reference them with a central database. It is designed to identify offences including expired vehicle documents, over-speeding, and traffic light violations.
According to the government, when a violation is recorded, the system automatically alerts the vehicle owner via phone calls and text messages to the registered phone number. The notification details the specific offence and directs the owner to pay any applicable fines through the official portal, www.paydelta.ng.
Officials stated that the initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize traffic law enforcement and reduce accidents caused by reckless driving and disregard for road safety rules.
Motorists were warned that unpaid fines could hinder the renewal of vehicle particulars and may lead to vehicle impoundment by enforcement agencies.
The Directorate of Transport has advised residents and motorists to ensure their vehicle documents are valid and up to date, and to adhere strictly to traffic regulations at all times.
For further inquiries, the public can contact the Directorate of Transport via call, text, or WhatsApp at 08154087910, 09063522324, and 08139038432.
