Delta Governor mourns death of Warri’s meritus Catholic Bishop

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has expressed condolences to the Catholic Diocese of Warri following the death of its Bishop Emeritus, Most Reverend John Okeoghene Afareha.

The Diocese announced the passing of the cleric, who died at the age of 78, with “profound sorrow.”

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, in Asaba on Tuesday, Governor Oborevwori described the late Bishop as a “revered servant of God.” He stated that Afareha’s life of faith, humility, and dedication left an indelible mark on both the Church and society.

“The passing of Bishop Afareha is a great loss not only to the Catholic Church but to Delta State and humanity at large,” the Governor said. “He was a father, shepherd and man of deep prayer whose life exemplified service, sacrifice and obedience to the will of God.”

Governor Oborevwori highlighted the Bishop Emeritus’s spiritual discipline and pastoral simplicity, noting his unwavering commitment to the growth of the Catholic faith, particularly within the Warri Diocese.

The Governor extended his sympathy to the current Bishop of Warri, Most Rev. Anthony Ovayero Ewherido, the clergy, religious members, and the faithful of the diocese, as well as the family of the deceased. He prayed for divine comfort for the bereaved and for the peaceful repose of the late Bishop’s soul.

Reverend John Okeoghene Afareha was ordained a priest on December 30, 1973, and was consecrated as a Bishop on May 14, 1997.
