Asaba: The Delta State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Patrick Ukah, has assured that the state government is committed to ensuring the completion of the ultra modern Press Centre of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Delta State Council that is currently under construction in Asaba, the state capital.
Mr. Ukah, who gave the assurance in Asaba shortly after inspecting the progress of work at the Centre, said the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s administration will not risk having any uncompleted project in its already clean records.
“What I am assuring you is that this project will be completed in a record time. This is a project of Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa and we are not going to be involved in abandoned projects; that are why the Chief Press Secretary (Mr. Charles Aniangu) and I have been here to monitor this project”, the Commissioner said while fielding questions from journalists.
He said the inspection was aimed at ascertaining which areas of the project needs utmost attention, adding that though an “impressive” progress has been made, there are still much work to be done.
On the availability of resources needed to ensure the speedy completion of the single story building housing several offices, halls and other utilities, Ukah said “government has done what it promised to do”, suggesting that much of the work now lies in the hands of the NUJ state Executive Council.
The Delta State Chairman of the NUJ, Mr. Norberth Chiazor, had earlier disclosed that the project will be completed before he leaves office, adding that the Press Centre will comprise one of the success stories in his handover note.
Chiazor had, during the opening ceremony of the indigenous Newspapers/Magazines Chapel held in Asaba on Monday, March 6, 2017, disclosed that the union enjoys a robust relationship with the state government, particularly in matters concerning the Press Centre which the journalists’ union had embarked on since a time that predates 2015.
Although the tenure of the Chiazor led administration has officially elapsed, the Press Centre still remains a dream in the minds of newsmen in the state.
