The notorious midnight raids on churches in Delta State met a setback this week after the Police Command busted a syndicate behind the attacks.
On Tuesday night, a distress call alerted the police to a planned robbery at the Dominican City Church along Polytechnic Road, Ogwashi-Uku. Patrol teams led by CSP Israel Okomoyon, in collaboration with vigilante groups, moved swiftly and intercepted a gold-coloured Toyota Sienna suspected to be used by the criminals.
Inside the vehicle were two young men, Emmanuel Emiowor (21) and Noah Philip (20), both from PTI Road, Warri. A search revealed a deadly arsenal — a pump-action gun, three locally made single-barrel guns, a fabricated revolver, live ammunition, and an iron rod believed to have been used to break into churches.
The suspects, now in custody, confessed to being part of a gang that has targeted churches, looting instruments and other valuables. Some stolen items have already been recovered.
Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, praised the swift action of his men, vowing that Delta would never serve as a sanctuary for criminals. “We will remain relentless in dismantling these networks,” he said, urging residents to remain vigilant and call the Command’s emergency line 08036684974 whenever they spot suspicious activity.
