The Delta State Government has reiterated its commitment to control disease outbreak in the State by collaborating with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, the Federal Ministry of Health and the School of Disease Surveillance, Abuja.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Mordi Ononye disclosed this on Tuesday, 8/5/2018 when he took his turn to brief the press on the activities and achievement of his Ministry during the ongoing Ministerial press briefing by Commissioners on the activities and achievements of their Ministries at the Conference Hall of the Ministry of Information, Asaba.
Dr Ononye stated that the State Government had been able to put in place effective and efficient medical emergency response system with a structure that spans all the 25 Local Government Areas.
He revealed that the effective and efficient medical response had assisted the State to cope well with the recent outbreaks of Monkey Pox and Lassa fever diseases in the State.
“It is this system that made it possible for the achievements we have so far recorded in managing the outbreak of Lassa fever, monkey pox and the rest”
“This was well elucidated during the Lassa fever outbreak when the Ministry collaborated with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, the Federal Ministry of Health and the School of Disease Surveillance, Abuja for personnel training.” Dr Ononye stated.
The Commissioner also revealed that a total of six suspected cases were reported and three were confirmed in Aniocha South, Sapele and Oshimili North Local Government Areas, saying that six Local Government Areas were affected which included Aniocha South, Ethiope East, Sapele, Ndokwa East, Ika North East and Oshimili North.
According to the Commissioner, following the reported suspected outbreak of monkey pox in Bayelsa State, the State’s Rapid Response Team was activated and the State Ministry of Health in collaboration with WHO sensitised the Disease Surveillance Officers in the 25 Local Government Areas in the State.
Dr Ononye also revealed that the Ministry, in collaboration with the State Ministry of Information had inaugurated an Inter-ministerial Steering Committee on Information for Disease outbreak and control to effectively manage information on disease outbreak and how to combating it early.
