The Delta state Police Command on Thursday, June 22, 2017 declared in Asaba that normalcy has returned to the troubled Egbudu-Aka community following the attack on the Obi-elect, Obi Paul Nzemeke and his wife.
Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim told journalists at a press briefing where no fewer than 33 suspected criminals were paraded over various offences alleged that the Obi’s brother one Solomon Obi Okolie sponsored the attack using some disgruntled youths.
The Commissioner of Police said: “On 9/6/2017 at about 0600 hrs, there was breach of the public peace at Egbudu-Aka. The police swiftly moved in and rescued the Obi of Egbudu-Aka, Obi Paul Nzemeke ‘m’, his wife, Theresa Esemeke and one George Nnemuku ‘m’, whose houses had been set ablaze and who had been held hostage by some disgruntled youths led and sponsored by the brother of the Obi, one Solomon Obi Okolie. The Obi’s brother and nine others have been arrested and are undergoing interrogation.”
Mr. Ibrahim confirmed that the Obi is recuperating in a hospital from the torture he and his wife suffered in the hands of their attackers.
Also, he urged fleeing residents of the community to return to their land because peace and normalcy has been restored.
Also, The Delta state Police Command have decried the lingering boundary dispute and crisis among the Amai, Eziokpor, Ezionum, Umuebu and Obiaruku communities of Ukwuani Local Government Area of the State.
Commissioner of Police Mr. Zanna Ibrahim, who spoke while briefing journalists in the Okpanam Road, Asaba State headquarters of the Command during which about 33 suspected criminals over various offences in the state lamented that the lingering land dispute in Amai and the concomitant crisis with her neighbours in the Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta State have resulted in loss of lives and destruction of properties.
The Commissioner of Police said: “These crises which have somewhat become an annual ritual especially at the commencement of every new farming season have resulted in loss of lives and mass destruction of properties. Expectedly, the Command has severally convened meetings to broker peace among these communities but our efforts so far amounted to pour water on a hard rock.
“The communities have continued unabated I the act of kidnapping, abduction, murder and other unpardonable excesses in spite of the repeated appeals both from the security forces and the state government.”
