The former Governor of Akwa-Ibom State, Obong Victor Attah, has been appointed the Chancellor of Western Delta University (WDU), Oghara, Delta State.
The university’s Board of Trustees made the appointment and his inauguration will take place at the permanent site of the Western Delta University campus, on the Benin-Warri Expressway, Oghara, on Friday, November 9th, 2018.
The inauguration will be one of the highlights of the Western Delta University’s 10th year anniversary which will last all through this week and will end with the combined convocation on Saturday.
Obong Attah who governed Akwa-Ibom State from 1999 t0 2007 is not only a widely recognised architect but was the National President of the Nigerian Institute of Architects. He is also a practitioner of the National Council of Architects Registration Board, NCARB, of the State of New York, and a member by qualification, of the American Institute of Architects, AIA.
Obong Attah is not new to the developmental needs of a university. He developed the University of Calabar Master Plan as well as the University of Port Harcourt Emergency Campus Design. It was gathered that his experience in helping universities to take-off effectively, informed the WDU’s Board of Trustees to choose Attah as Chancellor WDU. Attah has also consulted for the British Overseas Development Agency’s Team for projects in Malawi, South Africa and parts of the Caribbean.
Last Sunday, two days ago, the activities kicked off with a Thanksgiving Service at the Baptist Church, Oghara. Mrs Christine Ibori-Ibie represented the WDU Visitor, Chief James Onanefe Ibori. The Vice-Chancellor of the WDU, Prof (Mrs) Otete Cecilia Okobia led the top-ranking staff of the university to the church service, which included the Registrar, Godwin Ojamaya Egbri.
At exactly 10.45:AM the Pastor of the Baptist Church, Oghara, called on the congregation to pray for WDU saying: “We want to put the Western Delta University in the hands of God. The university is located here (in Oghara).
“ A Pastor’s child has passed through the university and graduated from it. The meaning should not be lost on you. The meaning is that if the Pastor could financially support his child to successfully go through that university, then anybody here can also do so because that shows clearly that unlike other private universities, the WDU is not costly. So WDU was set up to bring quality education, that is affordable to your sons and daughters and my sons and daughters; to our children.
“So, I want to thank God for the vision He gave to those who set up the university here in Oghara; so it is your university. Let the entire church stand up as one and pray for the university. Pray for the V.C, staff and students that the presence of God will always be present in the Western Delta University as it provides quality education at an affordable rate. Please, also pray for the Faculty of Law that is just taking off.”
Every day of this week will be filled with various activities and will climax with the Convocation proper on Saturday.
