Asaba, October 9, 2025 — The Delta State Executive Council has approved ₦10 billion for the payment of pension arrears, in a move to clear part of the liabilities inherited from previous administrations.

The meeting, chaired by Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme at Government House, Asaba, was held on the directive of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, who is on official assignment outside the state.

Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, said the approval reflects the government’s commitment to the welfare of retirees under the MORE Agenda.

“At today’s meeting, we approved ₦10 billion to begin defraying pension arrears. A committee will ensure the funds reach genuine beneficiaries transparently,” Aniagwu told journalists.

He also announced new completion timelines for two major flyovers in Agbor and Ughelli, both being handled by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc.

“The Agbor flyover’s deadline has been shortened from 24 to 18 months, while the Ughelli project will now be completed in 14 months instead of 24,” he said, explaining that the revision was to fast-track delivery and boost economic activity.

The council reviewed the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) for 2026, as part of preparations for the next fiscal year, and terminated several non-performing contracts.

One of the affected projects is the Igbodo Junction–Ubulu-Uku–Ogwashi-Uku Road, which will be re-awarded to a competent contractor.

“Government promptly pays for certified work, so any contractor that fails to perform will be replaced. We cannot allow delays or negligence,” Aniagwu warned.

The council also approved the formal presentation of the Staff of Office to His Royal Majesty, Engr. Mike Oghenovo Orugbo, Okporua I, the Ovie of Udu Kingdom.

Aniagwu reaffirmed that the Oborevwori administration remains focused on transparency, infrastructure, and people-oriented governance.

“Governor Oborevwori insists that projects must deliver value to Deltans. Where contractors fail, we will act swiftly in the people’s interest,” he said.
