FLASH BACK – Gani in the dock for criminal defamation on his 50th birthday

(State Vs. Gani Fawehinmi)

Charge No.ID/9C/88

By Richard Akinola Ii

After Justice Eniola Longe Struck Out the Suit in which Chief Gani Fawehinmi had tried to privately prosecute two security Chiefs in Babangida regime as being the mastermind of the assassination of Dele Giwa, Chief Gani Fawehinmi addressed the press outside the courtroom on February 23, 1988 wherein he described the court proceedings as “an Alawada Circuit, a pre-arranged collusion between the trial Judge and Lagos State Attorney General and the D.P.P”.

The government thereafter charged him to court for criminal defamation before Justice Olu Obadina of Ikeja High Court. Gani was arraigned on his 50th birthday. The judge granted Gani bail in his own recognizance. Fawehinmi went to the Court of Appeal to Challenge this trial and the Court quashed the Charge.
