The Forum of Delta State NGOs has commended DESOPADEC and Ministry of Environment for the ongoing desiltation of canals across Delta State.
The Forum’s Coordinator, Deacon Okezi Odugala, who described the desiltation work as timely and proactive measures at eco-friendly management of the environment from potential disaster from flooding as NIMET has warned of the oncoming flood in the country and the need for urgent interventions with Delta State inclusive as a coastal state recipient to climate change disasters.
Odugala acknowledged that DESOPADEC is one of the few intervention agencies in the oil and gas producing states of Nigeria driving climate change mitigation and adaptation visibly.
He commended the Chairman, Olorogun John Nani and Managing Director, Chief Festus Ochonogor and the management team as square pegs in squares holes and advocates of environmental sustainability in words and deeds, even as he called on Deltans and residents to partner with them for a clean, safe and healthy Delta State.
Deacon Odugala said: “It is heart warming that DESOPADEC is at the forefront of implementing the environmental sustainability component of the MORE Agenda of our amiable Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.
It is time we as Delta State stakeholders change from our negative environmental practices of indiscriminate waste disposal, deforestation, vandalization of oil and gas installations, bunkering amongst many other unfriendly environmental practices to save our ecosystem from pollution.
“We must manage our wastes in an eco-friendly way and plant trees to mitigate climate change.”
