President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday postponed his scheduled trip to the G20 Leaders Summit in Johannesburg and the AU–EU Summit in Luanda, following fresh security breaches in Kebbi and Kwara States.
The President, who was set to depart Abuja today, shelved the foreign engagements to receive further security briefings on the kidnapping of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and Tuesday’s bandit attack on worshippers at the Christ Apostolic Church in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State.
According to a State House statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President also ordered an immediate reinforcement of security personnel in Eruku and across the entire local government.
Tinubu’s decision followed a formal request from the Kwara State Governor, prompting him to direct the military and police to deploy additional personnel to the affected communities and to “go after the bandits” responsible for the attack.
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Kebbi on the President’s behalf, is expected to submit a comprehensive report on the abduction of 24 schoolgirls. Tinubu is also awaiting briefings from the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) on the Kwara church attack.
The President reaffirmed his earlier directive to security agencies to do “everything possible” to rescue the abducted girls and ensure their safe return.
