The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has called for a stronger and more strategic military partnership between the Nigerian Army and the United States Army to confront Nigeria’s complex and evolving security threats.
Shaibu made the call on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, while receiving the United States Defence Attaché to Nigeria, Lieutenant Colonel Semira Moore, on a courtesy visit to the Army Headquarters in Abuja.
He praised the United States Government for its sustained support and long-standing cooperation with the Nigerian Army, noting that the partnership has significantly strengthened professionalism and institutional capacity within the force. The COAS highlighted that he and several senior officers are products of top United States military institutions, underscoring the depth of the bilateral relationship.
The Army Chief said Nigeria is keen to tap further into the United States Army’s vast experience in both kinetic and non-kinetic operations, advocating expanded collaboration in operations, doctrine development, capacity building and strategic capability. According to him, strong international military partnerships are critical to reinforcing Nigeria’s internal security framework and promoting lasting peace and stability.

In her response, Lieutenant Colonel Moore reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to a robust and mutually beneficial relationship with the Nigerian Army. She pledged to deepen cooperation, particularly in capacity building, intelligence sharing and joint operational planning.
Moore also disclosed that the US would continue supporting the Nigerian Army in key non-kinetic areas such as humanitarian assistance and troop welfare, stressing that these remain vital to sustaining morale and operational effectiveness.
