The Chairperson of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Delta State Chapter, Comrade Sonia Unobunjo, has called on journalists, media owners and stakeholders to use their platforms to amplify women’s voices and promote gender equality in society.
Unobunjo made the call in a goodwill message at the International Women’s Day 2026 celebration organised by the Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF), where she emphasised the importance of investing in women to achieve sustainable development.
Speaking on the theme of the celebration, “Give to Gain,” the NAWOJ chairperson said meaningful progress can only be achieved when individuals, institutions and communities are willing to provide opportunities, mentorship and support to women and girls.
According to her, when society gives women access to education, leadership opportunities and economic empowerment, the benefits extend far beyond individuals to families, communities and the wider society.
She noted that despite the significant contributions of women to nation-building, many still face barriers in leadership, economic participation and representation in decision-making processes.
Unobunjo commended the Delta Online Publishers Forum for using digital media platforms to promote conversations that advance gender equality and social development across Delta State.
“The media remains a powerful tool in shaping narratives, influencing policy discussions and ensuring that the voices of women are heard,” she said.
She urged journalists and publishers to continue telling impactful stories that highlight the achievements of women, expose barriers to equality and inspire action toward building a more inclusive society.
The NAWOJ chairperson also reaffirmed the commitment of the association to collaborate with media stakeholders to promote gender-sensitive reporting and advocate for greater participation of women in governance.
She further called on stakeholders, including government and the private sector, to support initiatives that empower women and create opportunities for the younger generation.
Unobunjo congratulated the Delta Online Publishers Forum for organising the event and encouraged participants to embrace the spirit of “Give to Gain” by mentoring young women and supporting initiatives that would enable more women to thrive.
International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8 to recognise the achievements of women and promote gender equality worldwide.
