MRA Trains 31 Nigerian Journalists on  media, safety

Media Rights Agenda, a non-governmental organization, has trained over 30 journalists from Northwest, Middle Belt, and Northeast Nigeria on laws affecting the media and journalist safety.

The two-day workshop, held in Abuja, aimed to enhance journalists’ knowledge on freedom of expression, media development, and digital rights.

Funded by the MacArthur Foundation through the Wole Soyinka Centre for Investigative Journalism, the event brought together journalists from the broadcast, print, and online mediums.

Media Rights Agenda an independent, non-partisan, not-for-profit, non-governmental organization committed to promoting and Defending Freedom of Expression, was established in 1993 Access to Information, Media Development, Digital Rights and Freedom for Journalists in Nigeria.

Executive Director of the Media Rights Agenda, Edetaen (Edetayin) Ojo, while addressing the participants at the Workshop mentioned that the workshop was important to enable Journalists know their rights, boundaries and where to get help when the need arises.

The Facilitators addressed pressing topics such as: Regional and International Frameworks on Freedom of Expression, Media Freedom and Safety of Journalists, Challenges posed by Laws and Regulations to Media Freedom in Nigeria, Avoiding Legal Liabilities as a Journalist, Access to FIOB among others.

Participants during an interview shared their experience, pledging to organise step-down sessions for colleagues at their various stations.

According to the participants, with the knowledge they have gained, their rights as journalists would not be tremble upon anymore.

Highlight of the training was the distribution of certificates to participants of the workshop.
