Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has urged Nigerians to shun ethnic rivalry, political division, and other forces that threaten national unity, calling instead for renewed commitment to peace, progress, and shared prosperity as the country marks 65 years of independence.
Speaking at a colourful ceremony on Wednesday, October 1, 2025 at the Cenotaph, Asaba, to commemorate the anniversary, Oborevwori, represented by his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, said the day was a time to honour the sacrifices of Nigeria’s founding fathers, reflect on the nation’s journey, and chart a more inclusive path for the future.
“The true strength of Delta lies in its people. As we celebrate Independence Day, let us embrace independence from ethnic division and rivalry, from dependency, and from anything that seeks to tear us apart,” the governor said. “We must unite under the common banner of One Delta.”
He described Independence Day as a moment “to remember, reflect and renew”, honouring the past, learning from challenges, and recommitting to the ideals of unity, peace, and progress. Oborevwori also congratulated President Bola Tinubu and prayed for divine wisdom to guide his leadership.
Focus on Development
Highlighting his administration’s achievements, Oborevwori said Delta State is implementing a sustained infrastructure renewal programme under its MORE Agenda, including new highways, flyovers, urban roads, drainage projects, and waterway structures aimed at connecting communities and boosting the economy.
On healthcare, he noted that hospitals and primary health centres were being upgraded with modern equipment such as dialysis and CT scan machines, while free medical services are being provided to pregnant women, children under five, widows, and senior citizens.
He added that education remains a top priority, with ICT hubs and training centres being established to equip youths for the digital age, alongside job creation schemes and social welfare programmes to support vulnerable groups.
‘Stay Focused, Avoid Divisive Voices’
Oborevwori appealed to citizens to remain united and support the state government’s efforts, warning against “mischief-makers” seeking to derail progress.
“Democracy allows criticism, but let us focus on constructive ideas. Do not be distracted by those who thrive on division,” he said. “With your steadfast support, we will go even further.”
The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to security, noting significant progress in safeguarding waterways and working with security agencies to maintain peace and stability.
Oborevwori called on youths to channel their energy into positive ventures and urged traditional leaders, civil society, and the private sector to partner with government in building a stronger state.
“As we celebrate 65 years of independence, let us renew our faith in God and in one another. Peace, unity, security, and justice are the only way to build a stronger Delta and a greater Nigeria,” he said.
The event featured a parade by military and paramilitary formations, inspection of the Guard of Honour, and was attended by top government officials, traditional rulers, and other dignitaries.
