Nigeria–Türkiye Set $5bn Trade Target as Tinubu, Erdogan Seal New Economic, Security Pact

Nigeria and Türkiye have set an ambitious $5 billion bilateral trade target as Presidents Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Recep Tayyip Erdogan moved to deepen economic, energy and security cooperation between both countries.

President Erdogan announced the target on Tuesday in Ankara during a joint press briefing with President Tinubu, noting that talks to scale up trade had already begun. Current trade volume between both nations stands at about $2 billion.

He said the newly established Joint Economy and Trade Committee would be the key vehicle for expanding Turkish investments in Nigeria and realising the $5 billion goal. Turkey currently exports aircraft, machinery, iron and steel, and chemical products to Nigeria, while Nigeria supplies crude oil and agricultural products to Türkiye.

Erdogan praised President Tinubu’s commitment to economic reform, particularly in the energy sector, expressing optimism that cooperation between the Turkish Petroleum Corporation and Nigerian partners would deliver concrete results.

The Turkish leader also pledged support for Nigeria’s fight against insurgency, citing Türkiye’s experience in counterterrorism and confirming discussions on military training, intelligence sharing and defence industry collaboration.

President Tinubu, in his remarks, thanked Türkiye for its willingness to work with Nigeria to promote global peace, stability and shared prosperity. He stressed the need for open trade, inclusive economic growth and reforms that protect vulnerable groups, while reaffirming Nigeria’s role in advancing peace and stability across Africa.

At the end of the state visit, officials of both countries signed nine agreements covering defence cooperation, trade, diaspora policy, education, media, diplomacy, halal quality infrastructure and social development—signalling a broad reset and expansion of Nigeria–Türkiye relations.
