ABUJA, January 26, 2026
The Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) announced Monday that its investigation into sixteen officers arrested in October 2025 for “acts of indiscipline and breaches of service regulations” has concluded, with findings alleging some plotted to overthrow the government.
In a press release signed by Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, the military stated that the comprehensive investigation identified officers whose alleged actions were “inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards” of the military.
“The findings have identified a number of the officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government,” the release stated.
The military confirmed that the investigative report has been forwarded to the “appropriate superior authority” and that officers with cases to answer will be formally arraigned before a military judicial panel. The trial will proceed under the Armed Forces Act and service regulations.
“The AFN reiterates that measures being taken are purely disciplinary and part of ongoing institutional mechanisms to preserve order, discipline and operational effectiveness within the ranks,” the statement read, emphasizing the military’s commitment to due process.
The initial arrest of the sixteen officers was disclosed by the Defence Headquarters in October 2025, though specific details were not provided at the time. Monday’s update marks the first public confirmation of the grave nature of the alleged offenses.
The military assured the public of its “resolute” dedication to “maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, loyalty and respect for constitutional authority.”
