The Attorney General and commissioner for Justice, Mr. Pater Mrakpor (SAN) has confirmed that Delta State has no law banning open grazing.
Mrakpor made the clarification while fielding questions from journalists of the independent correspondents’ Chapel of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) who paid him a courtesy call in his office in Asaba.
While acknowledging that the problem of herders-farmers clash in the state, he said the situation is a challenge that the people must live with until the Federal government fully rises to the occasion.
Mrakpor said that in Delta State, what the Governor did was to encourage the setting up of committees at the local government level to be headed by the local government chairmen to nip problems of herders-farmers clash in the bud.
“What His Excellency the Governor has is to encourage the setting up of committees at the local government level. The committees will be headed by the local government council chairmen; it will meet on a regular basis and engage herders and farmers as quickly as possible. It’s a challenge that we have to live with until the RUGA policy of the Federal Government comes on stream,” Mrakpor said.
Calling for a big solution to the problem where herders need to graze their flock on grass that is fast becoming a scarce commodity, he said: “There is no law against grazing in Delta state. What we have done is to handle the conflict through engagement by committees in the local governments.” According to him, so far, there is some measure of peace.
On security, he admonished anybody who has a gate man must register them. ‘Our people must be conscious of the times and seasons we are in,” Mr. Mrakpor said.
Responding to a question on reservations that people have about the activities of the Delta State capital Territory Development Agency (DSCTDA) headed by his wife, Hon. Mrs Onyemaechi Mrakpor as Director General, he said: “There is no husband/wife in the work of government. Institutions must be strengthened to perform. There is a job to be done and it must be done. Persons must be obey societal laws and persons must enforce the laws.
He argued that it is normal for persons doing the wrong thing to complain, yet is incumbent on institutions assigned to enforce rules governing their operations.
On the 2023 governorship in Delta State, Mr. Mrakpor who said he was only mindful of overseeing the work that Governor ifeanyi entrusted on him said: “On the morning of the primaries we will know those who are running. Because it is only God who can determine who can be alive.
“Leadership is a very serious business; we should pray that God should pick for the four million Deltans a leader that will represent God’s interest because it is only the one that can represent God’s interest that can represent the people’s interest,” the Attorney general said.
