Obi slams fake news over doctored photos with Trump, MC Oluomo

Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, Mr. Peter Obi, has dismissed as false and malicious social media claims that he recently met with former U.S. President Donald Trump and Lagos transport union leader, MC Oluomo.

Obi, in a strongly worded statement on his X handle on Thursday, described the widely circulated photos depicting such meetings as “fake, doctored, and entirely fabricated,” warning Nigerians against falling for deliberate disinformation designed to mislead the public.

“My attention has been drawn to some pictures currently circulating on social media, falsely portraying meetings I never had,” Obi said. “One of such images purports to show me with U.S. President Donald Trump, alongside a fabricated claim that he praised me. Another seeks to depict me with MC Oluomo in his office. Let me state categorically that both pictures are fake, and the accompanying stories are entirely false.”

The former Anambra State governor emphasized that he had not met Trump recently, nor had he held any meeting with MC Oluomo, insisting that any such engagement would have been announced by him directly.

“For the avoidance of doubt, if I had such meetings, I would have personally made them public on my X handle. My politics has never been about seeking praise or cheap publicity; it is about confronting the real problems of Nigeria and working towards solutions grounded in integrity, accountability, and transparency,” he added.

Obi, who has repeatedly spoken against misinformation and divisive propaganda, said the incident underscores the urgent need for vigilance and verification in the age of fake news.

“These fabrications highlight the persistent dangers of fake news and disinformation in our society. They are not only misleading but deliberately designed to confuse, misguide, and distract the public,” he warned.

Reaffirming his commitment to issues-based politics, Obi said his focus remains on addressing Nigeria’s pressing challenges — from insecurity and poor governance to collapsing education and healthcare systems — and lifting millions of citizens out of poverty.

“My politics is strictly focused on addressing the plight of suffering Nigerians. A new Nigeria is POssible,” he declared.
