Obi slams FG over distribution of luxury vehicles for 2027 campaign

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised what he described as the reckless and insensitive distribution of luxury vehicles by government officials ahead of the 2027 elections, calling it a “profound abuse of public trust.”

In a strongly worded statement posted on his X handle on Thursday, December 4, 2025  Obi condemned the alleged allocation of scarce public resources to procure Hilux trucks, Hummer buses and other high-end vehicles for political mobilisation at a time when millions of Nigerians are battling hunger, unemployment and worsening insecurity.

He said it was distressing that while citizens were struggling with poverty and hopelessness, political leaders were parading brand-new Land Cruisers and other luxury automobiles, using the people’s suffering as “mere background for political theatrics.”

According to him, true leadership in a period of national hardship should be defined by empathy, responsible governance and urgent intervention in critical sectors such as food security, healthcare, education and community safety — not by ostentatious displays of wealth or premature electioneering.

Obi lamented that children continued to drop out of school due to financial constraints, mothers were dying during childbirth for lack of basic medical supplies, and families were being displaced by insecurity. Yet, he said, government priorities appeared skewed toward purchasing and distributing expensive vehicles instead of addressing existential challenges.

“This is not governance,” Obi declared. “It reflects profound insensitivity and an abuse of public trust disguised as political strategy. It betrays the essence of public service.”

He urged Nigerians to reject wasteful governance and demand leaders who uphold empathy, prudence and accountability, insisting that despite the country’s bleak realities, the vision of a better future remained within reach.

“A New Nigeria is not only necessary; it is possible,” he concluded.
